Piazza Tiziano Square in Pieve di Cadore, Dolomites, Italy

Dear Wandering Spirit,

On the Belluno Dolomites, the medieval town of Pieve di Cadore lies only 1.5 hours away from Venice. This lovely place with 3700 inhabitants is the capital of the Central Cadore valley and fulcrum of the region. Furthermore, it is the birthplace of one of the most renowned Renaissance painters: Tiziano. 🖌️

Historical Mountain Crossroad

The town named Pieve di Cadore, which means Parish Church in English, always played a strategic role in this part of Italy. It is the crossroad of two important valleys (Pieve and Boite).

Historic artifacts and relics from Ancient Roman times 🏺 have been found around Pieve di Cadore. And the MARC Museum offers an overview of the glorious past of this region.

Birthplace of a Renaissance Painter

The Palace of the Magnificent Community was built in 1447 and is the hotspot of the town, with its stronghold, walls and the crenelated tower. In fact, the town hosts the native home of the Renaissance painter 🎨 Tiziano Vecellio (1490-1575), which has been opened to visitors.

You can combine a visit to these two sites with one ticket. After these two, St. Mary’s church was built in the 18th century and is the third most important building in Pieve.

Take a moment to enjoy the main square, Piazza Tiziano, and stroll through the old narrow city streets. Pieve offers a bit of culture and an amazing view of the valley; moreover, you can start from here one of the many hiking trails 🥾 for any skill level.

Another museum that you can check out is the Eyeglass Museum 👓, where you can discover more about the history and evolution of glasses. Craftmanship is very important, and it contributed in the past to the development of all the places within this region. Check out the museums in Cibiana too.

Visit the Cadore Valley

Having said that the whole Cadore valley deserves a visit. Take incredible pictures around this area: the murals in Cibiana, the buildings of Pieve, and, of course, the renowned Cortina d’Ampezzo.

Regardless of which town you visit, there is only one activity to end your day: check in at one of the many bars all around. Then, enjoy the typical Italian aperitif 🍹 with the Aperol spritz.
