Dear Wandering Spirit,
In the last years, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic, the trend of digital nomads has exponentially grown. In 2020, a growth of 49% was recorded in the US. I believe you must have asked yourself at least once, ‘What do they actually do?’
You might have seen some social media profiles, read stories or watched videos. Keep reading to get more insights into the world of digital nomads and where to start if you aim to become one!
Who Are Digital Nomads?
A digital nomad is a person who works remotely. Thanks to technological progress and new ways of work, the digital nomad travels several countries and stays for more than a few weeks. The main quality of a digital nomad is minimalism. In fact, digital nomads carry light luggage with limited, versatile clothing and, of course, their work tools.
While some of them often move from one spot to another, others enjoy slow travel to deep dive into new cultures for some weeks or even months. The benefit of this way of living (and working) is the extreme flexibility and freedom. On the other hand, digital nomads must rely on themselves, and they might feel lonely at some point.
Are Digital Nomads And Backpackers The Same?
The evolution of the workplace and of many popular touristic destinations, which are famous among the so-called “snowbirds” offers a variety of solutions to support this phenomenon. Hotels, cafes, and co-working spaces are being created all around the world to fit the specific needs of this growing niche. 💻
High-speed Wi-Fi, quiet areas to make business calls, and ergonomic workstations all contribute to the digital nomad’s wellbeing. Working for a US or European company but being physically in Singapore, India, or Malaysia is something that many people dream of. Especially younger people, who wish to travel the world but have not the required wealth to start as backpackers.
What Work&Travel Programs Are Offered to Digital Nomads?
In 2022, this trend is nothing new, but public awareness has increased to a level that demands a certain degree of flexibility from employers. Fully remote positions or at least a period of time to “work & travel” during the year are offered. Digital nomad visa programs are being offered or implemented by governments. Customised assurances and data and phone flat rates are getting more popular than ever.
I genuinely believe this trend will increase in the next years and that more companies will understand the benefits of combined work & travel solutions for their employees. This surely implies bigger efforts to make it work, but I am confident this trend has come to stay. Check out below some useful links to get started as a digital nomad!
What do you believe of this new trend? Would you at least try it? Or do you believe that travelling and work should be kept apart? I would surely recommend it to many friends!
