Approaching Kutna Hora and Sedlec Ossarium in Czechia

Literally a Spectacle to the Bone

The lovely town of Kutna Horá lies in the middle of the Bohemia region in the Czech Republic and is home to 20,000 people. Established as a small village, it soon became a neuralgic centre in the region in the Middle Ages, growing to become the second biggest town in the country after Prague. 🏘️

It is actually situated 70 km west of Prague. Beyond the pleasant countryside buildings, this place is definitely worth a visit because it hosts a truly unique UNESCO world heritage site. In fact, during the Bohemian Wars in the 15th century, many people were killed, and their bones were used to build decorations inside the Sedlec Ossuary.

You read right, this place hosts the skeletons of almost 70,000 people, and it is a unique spectacle with its bone-made chandelier, garlands of skulls, and four pyramids. 🦴 Although photos are not allowed, I can assure you that you will never forget this puzzling sight. Be prepared with a light jacket, as it is dark and quite chilled inside.

Kutna Horá is not only home to the Sedlec Ossary, but is a very significant town in the Czech Republic. Especially in winter, it looks like a fairy-tale. The town centre is very well-preserved, with lovely sights and small alleys.

Stone Fountain as water reservoir in Kutna Hora, Czechia

Plan a Day Trip to Kutna Horá

The Cathedral of St. Barbara dominates the hill, together with the former royal palace. This palace was turned into a museum to celebrate the silver coin minting. In addition, you can book a visit to the medieval mines, if you do not suffer from claustrophobia.

A day trip to Kutna Horá is enough time to see the main buildings. ⛲ When walking around the town, you will see a beautiful Stone Fountain which was a water reservoir in the Middle Ages for drinking water. If you can, consider staying overnight and enjoy some local food in the evening. If you are looking for an authentic place to taste local cuisine, you can sample Dacicky (link in the below section).
